20th Annual Einstein Family Day

Filed under: Philanthropy — by christiebrinkley @ 4:43 pm

Christie Brinkley _Family DayA high point of the festivities was the presentation of the first “Spirit of Family” Award to global fashion icon Christie Brinkley , who has served as celebrity chairwoman of Family Day since 2002. The award was established by the Women’s Division to mark the 20th anniversary of Family Day, a major initiative of the Division that has raised millions in support of medical research and medical education programs at Einstein.

In accepting her award, Ms. Brinkley movingly highlighted Einstein’s work, particularly in the areas of autism and breast cancer research. “It is I who should be thanking you,” she said.

According to Jackie Harris Hochberg, president of the New York Chapter and an event co-chair, Christie Brinkley was the obvious choice to be the first recipient of the special honor, which recognizes an outstanding friend and supporter of Family Day. “Christie embodies everything this event celebrates: a strong desire to make a difference and a passion for helping Einstein scientists and physicians improve health outcomes for people everywhere through cutting-edge medical research and state-of-the-art patient care,” noted Ms. Hochberg. “By graciously going out of her way to make a personal appearance at Family Day each year, Christie has literally ‘been there’ for us, and for Einstein. In doing so, she’s helped Einstein make a difference in the lives of so many other families. We’re proud and honored to call her a member of the Einstein family.”

Pancakes, Petunias and a Parrot on Her Shoulder

Filed under: Interviews — by christiebrinkley @ 5:28 pm
Interview with Robin Finn of the New York Times

Christie Brinkley, that über-wholesome alumna of the first, and arguably most durable, wave of supermodels, is turning her focus from modeling to design. Her creations: eco-friendly fabrics, jewelry for the catalog retailer Ross-Simons, and eyeglasses. Next on her design agenda is furniture — something Ms. Brinkley, 55, can always use, as a woman with two waterfront cottages and a stone-and-shingle compound in Bridgehampton called Tower Hill that serves as headquarters for her and her son, Jack, 14, and daughter Sailor, 11. (Her daughter Alexa Ray Joel, 23, visits frequently.) The household also includes a Labradoodle, a toy Yorkie and a parrot. Her Sundays are deliberately low-key, she says.

BEAT THE CLOCK I wake up early every day, around 6:30 or 7, and even if I set my alarm, I’ll wake up a few minutes before it goes off: I have fear of alarm-clock noise. What’s different about a Sunday is that it’s a “pressure is off” day; it’s like eating potato chips on Super Bowl day. You know everyone else is doing it, too. I’ll try and sneak downstairs in my pajamas without waking anybody else up — the kids always have friends over on weekends, and once they’re awake, forget it.

Newsday captures Christie Brinkley in the garden

Filed under: Interviews — by christiebrinkley @ 4:27 pm

Interview with Jessica Damiano

cb_newday
I spoke with Brinkley last month about my favorite topic, gardening, which turned out to be a shared passion between us.

How did you become interested in gardening?
I grew up on the beach in Malibu, and we didn’t have gardens there. My house was on a pile of sand. My mom had a couple of ice plants in a container on the deck, so, for me to get my hands in the soil, I was so intimidated. I thought I had to be an expert. I didn’t know what to do, so I called a gardener, Scott Chaskey, whose son was on my son’s baseball team. He’s a major organic farmer out here and he came to my house and demystified it for me. But I still throw the seeds in and read the back of the pack.

Brinkley speaks out on pollution, autism

Filed under: Philanthropy — by christiebrinkley @ 1:27 pm

CB_EinsteinChristie Brinkley has been speaking out about the environment and calling for more research into childhood health disorders – and Sunday she linked those two causes, saying she suspects that pollution is one of the causes of autism and other developmental problems.

“I think it’s all related – it’s silly to think we’re not affected by our environment,” she said in an interview at a carnival in Bridgehampton held to benefit Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s National Women’s division, which oversees research into children’s health issues and treatments. “We all know the expression, ‘You are what you eat.’ Well, you put together the entire environmental cocktail we’ve been subjected to, and it’s dangerous.”
